Great Blue Herons Courtship Display
(c) Norman Piluke 1994 "Love Birds" Great Blue Herons
# 0423 "Love Birds" (Great Blue Heron Courtship Display)
This is considered a "One in a Million Photograph." Taken in 1994, a moment that was captured by Norman Piluke at Venice Rookery in Florida, U. S. A. One heron came back to the nest and they did their allo-preening and courtship displays. Their heads were down preening each others, rubbing their bills over each others feathers on the back and neck and when they finally stretched up they were crossed-necks. Their bills were locked up and then they started swaying them back and forth. It was just great to be there at that moment in time when this courtship was happening. We stayed while a group of photographers left us for lunch. The day before, we have seen this particular pair of herons in this unusual courtship behavior for the first time. We observed and photographed the whole day and on this second day, the "crossed-necked herons" were captured on film at its best. This pair of Great Blue Herons were named "Love Birds" by Norman.

PHOTOGRAPHY OF NORTH AMERICAN BIRDS:
This is just a part of Norman Piluke's Bird Portfolio. Norman and Joanie Piluke spend their time photographing and birdwatching at Point Pelee National Park and Rondeau Provincial Park during the spring bird migration. Some of these birds were photographed in National and State Parks in Florida and in Texas, U. S. A.
